Quip export: save a personal Quip account before shutdown

Quip is retiring its free tier on March 31, 2027. If you've got personal notes, old project work, chats, or files in Quip, making an archive now gives you something to download, keep, and inspect after the service is gone.

Quip Rescue exports a personal or free Quip account into a downloadable archive. It isn't a migration into another app. The archive is the thing you keep.

What Quip can export by itself

Quip can export individual documents and spreadsheets from the product. That works when you need one file.

Saving a whole account is different. A full archive needs folder context, comments, chats, attachments, and enough metadata to make the result understandable later.

What Quip Rescue saves

  • Documents, spreadsheets, and slides where Quip provides an export.
  • Chats and conversations that don't live in normal folders.
  • Anchored comments and message history.
  • Attachments and inline images.
  • Folder paths, thread titles, dates, and other metadata that help you find things later.
  • A local browser view for checking the result without sending it to another service.

How Quip Rescue works

Quip Rescue connects to Quip with a personal access token and saves the content your account can reach. When the export finishes, you download a zip file. After unzipping it, open Open Quip Rescue Archive.html to browse the saved documents, folders, chats, comments, and attachments.

The hosted service keeps the completed archive temporarily so you can download it. The downloaded archive is the durable copy you control. You can delete the hosted copy when you're done.

Before you start

  1. Use Quip Rescue only for a personal or free Quip account.
  2. Don't use it for employer, client, school, government, or organization-managed Quip data.
  3. Create a Quip personal access token from the Quip account you want to save.
  4. Leave time for the export to queue and run, especially if the account has many documents or attachments.
  5. Download the archive, unzip it, and check a few important documents before you call it done.

What Quip Rescue doesn't do

Quip Rescue doesn't move your account into Notion, Google Docs, Confluence, or another service. It doesn't provide permanent hosted storage or recurring backups.

The work is narrower: make a durable Quip archive before the shutdown, then get out of the way.
